An Australian television favourite has been commemorated by the Royal Australian Mint with a new set of limited edition coins to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Mr Squiggle first appeared on television screens in 1959, with the popular puppet with the pencil nose inspiring many young children to draw.

The four $2 coins, two $1 coins and a unique 1 cent coin feature characters from the iconic program, including Mr Squiggle, Bill the steam shovel, Gus the snail and Blackboard.

Rebecca Hetherington - daughter of Mr Squiggle creator Norman, who died in 2010 - told news.com.au it was an honour to have her father’s work immortalised “in this unique way”.

“The coins perfectly represent Mr Squiggle’s fun and imaginative view of the world — attributes he shared with my father,” she said.

“I’m excited to share this opportunity with Australians who have grown up with him and remember him fondly and also to introduce Mr Squiggle to a new generation.”

Mr Squiggle ran on the ABC between 1959 and 1999.

The coin set, produced in partnership with Woolworths, will be available at their supermarkets for four weeks from today.
