WA’S unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level since the start of the year on the back of a lift in people holding down full-time work.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics this morning showed the State’s unemployment rate down to 6 per cent through July.

The last time it was at that level was in February.

It was driven by a lift in full-time work, which increased by almost 13,000 through the month, while the number of people out of work fell slightly to its lowest level in five months.

Nationally, the unemployment rate dipped slightly to 5.3 per cent.

It happened despite the number of Australians holding a job falling by 3900.

The overall participation rate, which measures the number of people in work or looking for it, fell in July, accounting for the drop in the jobless rate.

Apart from WA, other parts of the country to report a fall in unemployment included Victoria (to 5 per cent) and the Northern Territory (to 4 per cent).

The jobless rate increased in NSW (to 4.9 per cent), Queensland (to 6.1 per cent), South Australia (to 5.7 per cent) and Tasmania (to 6.4 per cent).

It was steady in the ACT, which has the nation’s lowest unemployment rate of 3.6 per cent.
