A BRIT whose "fit and healthy" wife died on a Thomas Cook holiday in Egypt says her death has haunting similarities to a tragic couple who passed away last week.

Clive Eversfield was staying at a five-star resort with his wife Alison Sonnex, 54, when they noticed a "strong smell" in their room and fell violently ill.

The following morning the teacher, from Ramsgate, Kent, collapsed at the Royal Tulip Hotel and taken to hospital where she died, the Daily Mail reported.

Just over a week ago, Susan and John Cooper were staying at another Thomas Cook hotel but died within hours of each other after reports of a "strange odour".

Egyptian authorities recorded all three tragedies as a result of natural causes - with Mrs Sonnex's death on April 12 this year being put down as "heart failure".

But the Coopers daughter Kelly, who described them as "fit and healthy", claimed "something suspicious has gone on" and a second autopsy has been ordered.

Now Mr Eversfield, 59, has come forward after he was left "stunned" by the "many similarities" of the Coopers' deaths - and fears it could be a "cover-up".

The engineer told the newspaper: "It is not a one-off. Three people, who their relatives believed were fit and healthy, have died. There are several common denominators – something is clearly wrong."

He said that it was towards the end of their week-long holiday that he noticed an odour in his room and saw that two neighbouring rooms had been "sealed off" with tape.

The dad-of-three continued: "We thought that was strange and then started to smell a strong smell like bleach or something in our room."

The next day was the couple's last day of the trip and they ate at the hotel buffet before heading back to their room to pack for the flight back the following morning.

But Mr Eversfield said that at 1am they both started to feel really sick and were up in the middle of the night projectile vomiting and had diarrhoea.

They were desperate to get home and started to check out but Mrs Sonnex, who taught languages at Dane Court grammar school in Broadstairs, collapsed.

Both were taken to hospital and put on drips but half an hour later the stepmum fell unconscious and was rushed into intensive care, leaving her husband alone.

He said that around two hours later someone came in and told him his wife had died.

In June, an opening inquest heard the UK post-mortem results gave the cause of her death as unascertained and full inquest is due to take place this month.

A Thomas Cook spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Alison Sonnex tragically died while on holiday in Marsa Alam in Egypt earlier this year.

"Our resort and welfare team supported the family at the time and our Head of Customer Welfare has been in touch with Mr Eversfield regularly since.

"The death was registered as natural causes, and we are fully supporting the Coroner who is investigating.”

The holiday firm continues to investigate the Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel - the resort where the Coopers fell ill on August 21.

John Cooper, 69, died in the couple's hotel room, while his 64-year-old wife died just hours later in hospital.

The couple, from Burnley, Lancashire, were on the "holiday of a lifetime", when they died, friends said.

Mr Cooper owned a building firm in Burnley while Mrs Cooper was a long-serving staff member at a branch of Thomas Cook in the Lancashire town.
