A MAN has been rushed to hospital after being sprayed with ammonia in a sickening attack in east London this evening.

Police were called to Roman Road in the Tower Hamlets area of the capital at around 5.40pm after the assault on a 29-year-old victim.

A statement read: "We're dealing with an incident at around 5.40pm in which a substance, believed to be ammonia, was thrown at a 29-yr-old man in the area of Roman Rd, E3.

"The victim was taken to hospital. Thankfully we understand injuries are not serious. Investigation is underway; no arrest yet."

Pictures from the scene show emergency workers outside a Superdrug shop which has been cordoned off by police.

The attack followed another assault involving a corrosive substance on Stoke Newington High Street in North London in the early hours of this morning.

A 21-year-old man was rushed to hospital after having the liquid thrown over his face, police said.

He also sustained cuts to his hands which are believed to have been caused by a knife.

Officers were called to the scene by the London Ambulance Service at just before 2.35am today.

The London Fire Brigade was also at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Scotland Yard said: "The man has been taken to an east London hospital.

"His injuries are not being treated as life-threatening or life-changing."

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.
