Adelaide zookeepers have artificially inseminated their giant panda Fu Ni after "some very positive signs during introductions" between her and potential mate Wang Wang failed to result in natural mating.

Zoos SA says Fu Ni was inseminated twice this week after the animals' 36-hour breeding window closed, and zookeepers are now treating Fu Ni as if she's pregnant.

Any pregnancy won't be confirmed until about two weeks before she is due to give birth, so the zoo's Bamboo Forest will be closed until Monday to maximise the chance of success.
