A US college party nearly took a tragic turn at the weekend when an overload of dancing and jumping caused a floor to give way.

About 30 people were taken to local hospitals in South Carolina after falling through the wooden floorboards and into the building’s basement.

Several party-goers managed to capture the incident on their smartphones.

In one video that was uploaded to Snapchat, dozens of young college students’ singing turn to screams as a large part of the floor collapses, leaving them in a heap below.

"Everybody was jumping, next thing you know, I'm jumping, I had my hands in the air and I can feel myself falling," Leroy Pearson, who suffered minor injuries, told US news outlet WSPA-TV.

Clemson Police chief Jimmy Dixon said it was fortunate that no one was seriously hurt.

"There could have been entrapments, there could have been deaths involved," he said.
