Am I safe from my ISP on private trackers?

    Hi there,

A while back I downloaded some movies from a public tracker and then I did get a notice from my ISP Time Warner that I was infringing on copyright don't do it again etc.

I'm a Demonoid member and former what.cd member. But I don't understand, what makes a private tracker safe from your ISP seeing that you my be downloading the latest Hollywood blockbuster?

A good friend says it's time to use a VPN, but I guess that's a different topic.

    Thanks!

before getting a seedbox, I was getting couple of warnings from my ISP every month, was using utorrent, finally decided to get one seedbox to add torrents and a secure FTP like FileZilla to grab my stuff, its been 5 months now and no more warnings, always use SFTP to grab your files otherwise everyone see what you grabbing and I dont use a VPN..

Seedbox - the terminology is kinda funny - does this refer to what I already have? I've got a QNAP NAS where all my files are downloaded to. I use Transmission on my laptop to do the download and the seeding.

Can I/Should I use Filezilla rather than Transmission?

In one word. no you are not safe. Use a VPN and/or a seedbox. Even a mis-configured VPN can cause issues due to DNS leaks. Use ipleak.net to test your ip address and rtc and dns leaks. In fact, you may want to consider setting up a VPN router (like DD-WRT), so that any traffic going through that router/SSID goes through the VPN--essentially masking your entire internet traffic through that router/SSID. AND, if you are more paranoid, while normally connected and VPN'd that way, you can use a software client VPN ON TOP of the base VPN (double-tunneling). But, that's not really necessarily, but an option.

You could also attempt to use public/retail wifi and use various methods (up to and including using a vpn) for circumvention around blocked protocols but since you wouldn't be using "your own" physical pipe in this example, that's just another added layer of security.

Using a private tracker since its not as open to the "general populace" adds an additional security layer. Also private trackers lock down their .torrent files so they can only be used by authenticated users. However. with no encryption of the traffic itself (ignoring bittorrent client encryption ingoing/outgoing setting), ISPs can still look at your traffic/protocols. But since that private tracker site is closed to most people, it's an added layer of security, and quality (in terms of the items available bitrates, no-fakes etc).

    @anajames

    Heavens yes!

Example 1: Public WIFI. God knows what malware might try to invade your device at starbucks

    Example 2: Advertising/Tracking

Example 3: If you live in a country that censors

Example 4: peer 2 peer file sharing w/ respect to invasion of privacy of your internet traffic (also falls under example #2).

Example 5: Sometimes you can get speed increases due to different routes regionally different from your regular ISP.

    Thumbs up

Well, i never get any notices. Thanks to the country i live in, no copyright law. But if you get any notices, there's just couple of options.

1- Fake Warnings: Some of the warnings are fake, it means that they send it to people to frighten them, but how. The ISP knows that you're downloading torrent, using Bittorrent technology is not prohibited, but because more than 95% of the data being transfered through bittorrent is illegal, they send warnings to people using torrent protocol.
2- VPN Services: o make sure there wont be any problem you can use trusted VPNs
3- Seedbox: Last but not the least, the best option is to use a seedbox. You can download your files on a seedbox and then download them back to your home computer using FTP/SFTP.

    Best regards and good luck
