The Yankees' pending acquistion of NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton in a trade stunned the baseball world Saturday, but nowhere were the shockwaves felt more strongly than in Boston.

The Yankees' biggest rival, the Red Sox, will now be at a distinct disadvantage to the Yankees' modern-day "Murderers' Row," as Stanton (59 home runs in 2017) joins the team that led the majors in home runs last year.

Boston media outlets were full of doom and gloom after news broke of the pending Yankees-Marlins trade. In a commentary entitled "The Red Sox' Giancarlo Stanton problem," Rob Bradford of WEEI.com wrote, "There is no way around it, this one hurt. And not necessarily just in the fashion that many are identifying. The Yankees are now the most talented team in the American League. That is indisputable."

CBS Boston's Matt Dolloff wrote, "In Boston, the story now shifts to how Red Sox president of baseball ops, Dave Dombrowski will respond to the Yankees’ move — and yes, there needs to be some kind of legitimate response. Otherwise it would be hard to tell if anyone in the front office at Fenway Park even has a pulse."

So far, the Red Sox's response has come in the form of emojis.

Dolloff adds that while the team might be looking forward to some of the sluggers, including Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, who could be available after the 2018 season, the team needs to act now: "It’s not exactly fair to hit the proverbial panic button before the Red Sox have done their business. But something big has to happen now, not just a year from now."

Some Boston-area sportswriters seem resigned to the fact that the team is now clearly a step behind their bitter rivals to the south. The Boston Herald's Steve Buckley has two suggestions for fans upset with news of the trade: "1) Stop following baseball. Or, anyway, stop following the Red Sox. The Yankees are clearly the team to beat in the American League East next season and for many seasons to come, so get out now while the gettin’s good. … Or 2) And, really, this is the best course of action — Red Sox fans who are whining and caterwauling about Stanton going to the Yankees can … stop whining and caterwauling about Stanton going to the Yankees."

That's not likely to happen anytime soon in the wake of this blockbuster trade
