WEST Coast is in the box seat to land local talent Ian Hill after the speedy forward was not selected in the opening round of the NAB AFL Draft.

Hill, who started the year seen as a top-five pick, was expected to slip down the order and could land at the Eagles, who will open Friday's proceedings with the first choice in round two.

Shoulder injuries curtailed Hill's draft position this year, but the 18-year-old, who attended the first round on Thursday night with his family at Marvel Stadium, looms as a nice fit for the Eagles.

Others likely to come into contention for West Coast at No.23 include medium forward Curtis Taylor, who also was at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night, while local midfielder Luke Foley may also be a contender.

Taylor was always likely to be on the fringe of the first round, and the Eagles are fans of his finishing ability in attack and marking on the lead.

Adelaide also has another selection coming after its two first-round picks on Thursday (Ned McHenry and Chayce Jones), with hard-working midfielder Luke Valente also on its radar to join the club.

The Crows have been tipped to place a bid on Greater Western Sydney Academy ruckman Kieren Briggs at No.24, and could also nominate Collingwood father-son backman Will Kelly at the same stage of the draft.

Both Briggs and Kelly were also at the draft on Thursday but will hear their names called early in the second round on Friday.

West Coast started its night with two second-round selections but traded away its second pick in a deal with Sydney, but it will also be fielding calls overnight from clubs who may be keen to move up the order and snap up a player such as Hill, who has slid down the draft board.

Melbourne is expected to place a bid at pick No.26 on Western Bulldogs father-son prospect Rhylee West and could then look at runner Tom McKenzie, while Gold Coast is expected to also weigh up jumping defender Jez McLennan and key back Jacob Koschitzke with its pick 27.

There were few surprises in the players taken in the first round.

Fremantle was linked to Sam Sturt this week and he fitted their need for a medium forward, while Riley Collier-Dawkins' fall to pick 20 made for a pleasant result for the Tigers, who had believed he would be taken earlier in the first round but held out hope he would reach their pick.

Ely Smith's late call-up to the draft and Brisbane's long-held interest in the bullish midfielder meant his selection was no shock, and although Xavier O'Halloran was not invited to the night, he was tipped to feature somewhere in the 20s range.
