FORMER champions Jimmy Bartel and Matthew Lloyd have offered a damning assessment of West Coast’s effort in last Thursday’s loss to Essendon.

Speaking on AFL Media’s Access All Areas, Bartel said the Eagles simply didn’t turn up and allowed themselves to be cut up in every area of the ground.

He said the type of application which allowed Bombers defender Adam Saad to brush off four tacklers in the midfield had nothing to do with the fact Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling were sidelined with injury.

“They just looked mentally off,” he said.

“I know they’ve got Kennedy, Darling and even (Tom) Barrass out, but those sort of efforts weren’t talent based things, they were energy and effort.”

Lloyd’s criticism was pointed at Eagles wingman Lewis Jetta, who let his opponent go free on more than one occasion in his side’s defensive 50, resulting in easy goals to the Bombers including one to the best-on-ground Devon Smith.

“He just wanted to cheat and get a ball out the back,” Lloyd said.

“You’re 32-1, (you have to) go with Devon Smith. It’s just not good enough.

“It pretty much summed up, from the first centre bounce, what they did on the weekend.”

Lloyd said after such a good start, a performance like the one against the Bombers would bring some heat on the Eagles going into Saturday’s game against Adelaide.

“Full credit to them, they won 10 in a row, so it allows for a lapse like this,” he said.

“But we’ll all be watching them this weekend.”
