Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has been ruled out of Wednesday's game against Pakistan with a side strain. Though Stoinis hasn't been ruled out of the World Cup, Cricket Australia have arranged for Mitchell Marsh to depart for the UK as cover.

Stoinis picked up the side strain during Australia's match against India at The Oval. While bowling the fifth over, the all rounder felt some pain. He returned to bowl the 48th and 50th overs of the game.

His fitness will again be assessed before the Pakistan game and a further call will be taken. ICC rules state that a player ruled out of the World Cup can't be added back to the squad.

"He was in some discomfort," Aaron Finch, the Australian skipper, said. "And it wasn't ideal, but he still managed to bowl a couple of overs. And speaking to guys who have done a side before, they say you can generally get through a game towards the end, but it's tough to get going after you've cooled down," he added.

For the game against Pakistan, the Australian captain said that they would have to look at different combinations so as to to take a decision whether to go in with the extra batsman or bowler. "We're going to have to juggle around especially that allrounder spot. We've got to find a few more overs now, whether we play the extra batter or extra bowler, we'll wait and see, and especially tomorrow with the conditions."

Marsh, who last played an ODI in January 2018, was supposed to be in England for the A tour later this month but his departure from Australia was fast-tracked to allow the team the option of a back-up allrounder, should Stoinis be ruled out of the tournament.

"Not exactly sure on how many games Stoinis miss. That's why Mitch is flying over. It's still being assessed. And over the next couple of days we'll have a clearer picture of what that looks like. Mitch was meant to fly over with the Australia A side on Friday. He's just coming a couple of days early as a bit of precaution, if Stoinis doesn't recover quick enough or doesn't respond to treatment well enough over the next few days."

Earlier this year, Marsh was dropped from Australia's list of contracted players for the 2019-20 season after enduring a tough season since being elevated as Australia's joint Test vice-captain. He lost his spot in the national side across formats due to poor performances, including twin failures against India in the Boxing Day Test match.

Even though Marsh had been replaced by Stoinis in Australia's ODI plans, he still remained on the radar for red-ball cricket. He ended the Sheffield Shield with a century and earned a spot in Australia's 14-member four-day side set to tour England in July.
