VALENTINE Holmes has again shown his worth to the Sharks, after becoming the first player to score 20 tries in a season for the club.

The mercurial fullback made history against the Knights on Sunday afternoon when he broke clear and beat fullback Nick Meaney with some sharp footwork to score under the posts midway through the second half.

“Watch this, bang! Just accelerates off the right foot leaves Meaney clutching at thin air and Valentine Holmes, well ‘David Fusitu’a here I come’,” said premiership-winning teammate Michael Ennis.

Ennis was referencing the competition’s top tryscorer’s tally, which is currently led by the Warriors winger on 21, now one clear of Holmes courtesy of a hat-trick against the Panthers on Saturday.

Holmes chalked up 19 tries in 2016 to tie David Peachey’s previous record (1999), but has now set a new mark in his first season playing in the custodian role.

The Fox League commentators noted it was a feat a long list of talented Cronulla backs couldn’t achieve, including Peachey, Andrew Ettingshausen, Mark McGaw, Mat Rogers and Ben Barba.

Ennis says he hasn’t seen an athlete with better agility.

“The ability to change direction at speed and maintain your acceleration, I haven’t seen better. The likes of [Holmes] and James Roberts, it’s exceptional,” he gushed.
