George Bailey's mid-season decision to step down as Tasmanian JLT Sheffield Shield captain to work on fixing his ailing batting has paid dividends.

The veteran's unbeaten 96 helped the Tigers to a dominant position against Queensland at stumps on Saturday's second day in Hobart.

The Tigers went to stumps at 4-240 in their second innings - an overall lead of 300 runs.

Bailey has shared a 104-run stand with former Test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade (40no) - the man who has replaced him as skipper.

Bailey, on the verge of his 24th first-class century, stood down last month as captain after a horror run with the bat in which he averaged just 5.6 across four games.

Since then, he's registered two 50s in two matches.

He hit 11 fours and a six on a Blundstone Arena deck that offered assistance to the seamers.

After resuming at 8-86, the Bulls were rolled for just 107 inside the first half-hour of play.

Tigers opener Jordan Silk posted a determined 54 from 174 balls before Bailey picked up the run rate.

"We're really pleased for him. He's worked hard all season, I think. It was just a matter of time before he got some rewards," Silk said.

"Hopefully, he can get those four more runs and kick on."

Australian limited-overs batsman Ben McDermott (six) was unluckily run out at the non-strikers' end when Jack Wildermuth managed to get a finger on a straight drive.

The Bulls' bowlers toiled hard, with Michael Neser, Luke Feldman and Wildermuth picking up a wicket each.

Queensland found themselves on the back foot after losing eight wickets in Friday's third session, with Tigers second-game seamer Alex Pyecroft taking 5-18.

Test-experienced Bulls, Matthew Renshaw, Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne, made starts with the bat but failed to go on.

Wade (63) top-scored in Tasmania's first innings of 167 after they were sent in.

He hit nine fours to go top of the Shield scorers (531) this season with five 50s and a century.
