TWO maiden centuries were the highlight of the opening two matches for the SA Scorpions in the 2018/19, 50-over Women’s National Cricket League season.

Played at Perth’s Murdoch University, the Scorpions lost their first game on Saturday to the Victorian Spirit when the Vics reached SA’s total of 251 in under 40 overs.

The bright spot on the day for the “Scorps” was Tahlia McGrath’s maiden 100.

Then on Sunday’s game against the Western Fury, right-hand batter, Bridget Patterson, scored a maiden century of her own, before being bowled for 109 off 131 balls.

Patterson’s runs were crucial to the Scorpions taking out their first win of the season, when they scored 254 in their 50 overs and then bowled WA out for 205.

After the game Patterson said she was relieved to have moved on from the 40s she’d scored during her solid pre-season.

“I just knuckled down and felt good — I feel like it’s been a long time coming so it’s amazing to finally do it,” she said.

Scorpions captain Megan Schutt starred with the ball, taking 3/39, and nabbing the first two WA scalps.

It means that SA is sitting second-to-bottom in sixth place on the WNCL ladder, but all sevens teams have the same four points with each having one win and one loss on the opening weekend.

The Scorpions next two games will be played in Hobart, on November 10 against Tasmania and November 11 against Queensland.
