Ajax have completed the signing of defender Nick Viergever from Eredivise rivals AZ Alkmaar for a reported fee of around 2million euros.

The 24-year-old is expected to replace Niklas Moisander, who was linked with Everton in January, in the Ajax defence should the Finland international move elsewhere amid further speculation this summer.

Viergever is a product of the Sparta Rotterdam academy, progressing through the ranks before moving to AZ in 2010 and he has one full Holland cap to his name.

Marc Overmars, director of football affairs at Ajax, said: "We wanted to have him and we're happy that it worked out.

"Nick is at a good age and has played over 200 matches of professional football. He's playable centrally on defence and also as a left back and at midfield.

"All in all, a reliable player who can be used in several positions at Ajax."
