Former Australian captain Steve Smith is back in the nets following surgery to repair the elbow he injured during the Bangladesh Premier League T20 tournament in January.

Smith posted footage of the session to Instagram on Thursday night, which shows the 29-year-old facing throwdowns without any apparent discomfort.

The video has since been viewed more than 400,000 times.

“Great to have my first hit back today,” Smith wrote in the caption.

“The elbow is feeling good!”

Smith and opening batsman David Warner have entered the final month of their year-long bans for ball-tampering.

Warner is also recovering from elbow surgery - sustained in the same tournament - but should return to competitive cricket next month.

“From all accounts they should be ready for the IPL, which is really positive,” national coach Justin Langer said.

“Dave’s probably a little more advanced but my understanding is they’ll be ready to go in the not-too-distant future.”

Both senior batsmen are tipped to earn selection in Australia’s World Cup and Ashes squads.
