Son Heung-Min produced late heroics for the second time in a week as Tottenham edged past Newcastle 1-0 at Wembley and climbed above Manchester City into second place.

Having struck an 80th-minute equaliser in Wednesday's 2-1 victory over Watford, Son stepped up again with an 83rd-minute winner.

Tottenham have still not drawn a top-flight match this season. Indeed, they have gone 29 games without a draw in the Premier League, setting a new record in the competition.

Positives

It looked for all the world like Spurs were going to spend the rest of the weekend ruing a missed opportunity, having spent most of the match camped on the edge of Newcastle's box, and watching as their rivals capitalised on their slip-up.

But as they have done so often this term, they dug deep and found a way to win -- again without the help of Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

They lie second in the table, just four points off the top -- even if only temporarily.

Jan Vertonghen also offered a threat at left-back, especially in the first half, which is encouraging as he may need to play there again if Ben Davies remains sidelined.

Negatives

Tottenham are not making these games easy for themselves and there was a big slice of fortune with the winning strike -- goalkeeper Martin Dubravka should have saved Son's shot, which was straight at him.

They surely cannot keep pulling these late victories out of the bag and the performances will need to improve. But those concerns are for another day, and Spurs now have a much-needed full week off.

Manager rating out of 10

7 -- Mauricio Pochettino's faith in Llorente has been questioned in recent matches but on Saturday he named him on the bench when he probably should have started, possibly because of tiredness.

Spurs' diminutive front three of Lucas Moura, Son and Erik Lamela failed to capitalise on some enticing crosses in the first hour. But Pochettino was quick to introduce Llorente on the hour-mark and he set up Son's winner, chesting the ball down to his teammate on the edge of the box.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Hugo Lloris, 7 -- Not desperately busy but came out quickly at Salomon Rondon's feet in the first half and denied Ayoze Perez with a diving save in the second period.

DF Kieran Trippier, 6 -- Made a couple of good overlapping runs but didn't create much. Vertonghen was more dangerous on the other flank.

DF Toby Alderweireld, 7 -- Made a couple of important first half blocks, one of them preventing a probable goal as Ayoze Perez attacked a low cross.

DF Davinson Sanchez, 7 -- Generally did a good job against Rondon, stopping him from winning high balls and holding the ball up, although Newcastle's forward headed against the post in the second half.

DF Jan Vertonghen, 7 -- Deployed at left-back, the Belgian delivered a steady stream of excellent, enticing crosses, including the delivery from which Lamela hit the crossbar.

MF Harry Winks, 6 -- Kept the ball moving in the middle and carried it forward whenever he could.

MF Moussa Sissoko, 6 -- Typically committed, testing Dubravka with a well-hit side-footed volley at one end while also racing back behind his centre-backs to halt attacks at the other end.

MF Erik Lamela, 6 -- Should have had an assist early on when Lucas headed wide, and was unlucky to hit the woodwork with a header of his own. He was unable to maintain his early threat, though.

MF Christian Eriksen, 6 -- Some of his passes were loose and aimless but he came close to a breakthrough as a flicked effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by Fabian Schar, and he set up a chance for Llorente with a lofted ball over the top.

MF Son Heung-Min, 7 -- Tested Newcastle with his pace as often as possible and while he was often crowded out, he kept plugging away and got the killer goal.

FW Lucas Moura, 5 -- Missed a big early chance when he headed wide, unmarked, six yards out. Substituted on the hour-mark.

Substitutes:

FW Fernando Llorente, 7 -- Missed a headed chance after losing the flight of the ball in the sun but set up Son's goal.

DF Danny Rose, N/R -- Replaced Lamela, with Pochettino hoping the left-back could supply another assist for Llorente, like against Watford in midweek.

MF Eric Dier, N/R -- Appeared late on to help his side see out the final moments.
