The Socceroos bounced back to beat Palestine 3-0 to get their Asian Cup campaign
With the pressure on, the Socceroos delivered.
A much-improved performance saw Australia convincingly beat Palestine 3-0 in a crucial Asian Cup clash at the Rashid Stadium in Dubai.
First half goals to Jamie Maclaren and Awer Mabil, just two minutes apart, set up the win, before Apostolos Giannou came off the bench to add a third in the 90th minute.
Anything less than a win would have been disastrous for the defending champions after their shock loss to Jordan in their opening match, but with this result the Socceroos’ campaign is back on track.
They won’t be able to top their group, but that could just be a blessing in disguise as it will likely avoid a round of 16 clash with Japan.
After demanding a strong response from his team, Graham Arnold would have been satisfied with the performance his players delivered.
Not only did Tom Rogic and Trent Sainsbury significantly lift, but Chris Ikonomidis and Jackson Irvine made a telling difference.
Arnold had some big selection calls to make and he opted to drop Robbie Kruse for Ikonomidis, while Irvine came in for Massimo Luongo.
Ikonomidis was immense. The Perth Glory forward set up Jamie Maclaren just three minutes into the game, then whipped in a quite suburb ball that resulted in Mabil’s goal.
Maclaren, under pressure to perform in his 10th Socceroos appearance, made up for his early miss to put the Socceroos ahead and score his first goal for Australia.
Three minutes into the game his air swing saw him embarrassingly miss a glorious opportunity, but he made up for it 15 minutes later when he headed home the opener after getting on the end of an excellent Rogic cross. Two minutes later Mabil doubled the Socceroos’ lead, before Arnold’s side put in a professional display in the second half to keep a clean sheet.
Rogic, playing with a splint after breaking a bone in his hand, played a starring role in the midfield and, along with Ikonomidis, was one of the best players on the park for the Socceroos.
The result will go a long way to settle some doubts and also give a glimpse into the future, with Ikonomidis certainly at the heart of that.
Rhyan Grant was a seamless replacement for the injured Josh Risdon, but Arnold will have to go without Sainsbury against Syria after the defender picked up a second yellow card and will be suspended for the match.
