Left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan became the first Bangladeshi bowler to claim 200 Test wickets as the hosts sealed a comprehensive 64-run victory against West Indies in the first Test in Chittagong.

Shakib returned figures of 2-22 on Saturday to also become the quickest player in history to reach the double of 3000 runs and 200 wickets, achieving the feat in his 54th Test to eclipse legendary English allrounder Ian Botham (55).

While it was a memorable Test for Shakib, his fellow left-arm spinner Taijul Islam did the most damage by taking 6-33 - his fourth five-wicket haul in his past six Test innings - to skittle the visitors for 139 in 35.2 overs after they were set 204 for victory.

Sunil Ambris top scored for the Windies with 43 and Jomel Warrican made a fluent 41 as the duo combined for a 63-run partnership for the ninth wicket to give the tourists a brief glimmer of hope after they’d collapsed to 4-11 and then 8-75.

After Bangladesh were bowled out for 125 in their second innings, adding 70 to their overnight score of 5-55, their spinners took the charge.

Shakib had opener and captain Kraigg Brathwaite stumped for eight to claim his 200th wicket as he and Taijul combined to take three wickets in just seven balls for no runs just before lunch.

Shimron Hetmyer and Ambris added 33 in a stroke-filled fifth wicket partnership before off-spinner Mehidy Hasan (2-27) broke through, removing Hetmyer for 27.

Taijul then triggered another collapse to complete his seventh five-for in 22 Tests, edging Bangladesh closer to victory.

Warrican and Ambris resisted only to delay the inevitable before Mehidy had Warrican caught by Shakib at midwicket to end a potentially threatening partnership.

Taijul fittingly wrapped up the West Indian innings, removing Ambris with his arm-ball to give Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Earlier, Bangladesh were dismissed for 324 in their first innings before the tourists were limited to 246 in response.
