ROBERT Whittaker’s UFC middleweight title fight has been scrapped — over 90 grams.

Despite insisting all week that he would make weight, Cuban Yoel Romero has weighed in heavy for the UFC 225 headliner in Chicago, though UFC boss Dana White confirmed later on Sunday that the fight itself would go ahead - even if a belt wasn’t on the line.

“The main event is on. Absolutely it’s on. He missed by 0.2,” White said.

While Whittaker was bang on the 185 pound (83.9kg) limit, Romero initially weighed one pound over.

The fighter then had an hour to make weight, but was again over on his second attempt. Afterwards, the Cuban was seen being assisted up the hallway by his team, so drained had he become by the cut.

After discussions with both the UFC and Team Romero, Whittaker has decided to still fight Romero in a bout scheduled for five rounds.

Elsewhere, fellow Australians Tai Tuivasa and Megan Anderson both made weight, as did their respective rivals Andrei Arlovski and Holly Holm.

The result is a huge disappointment for Whittaker, who has not fought since he last beat Romero for the interim lightweight title in Las Vegas last July.

For Romero, it was only the second time in his storeyed career that he has missed weight.

Worryingly though, it is also the second time in as many fights he has weighed in heavy — after failing to make the weight against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 in Perth in February.

Rockhold, who agreed to take the fight regardless, was knocked out in round three.

Upon hearing the news yesterday, the US middleweight tweeted: Ha.
