Real Madrid will sack manager Julen Lopetegui and bring in former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte to replace him, according to multiple reports in Spain.

Spanish outlet Onda Cero reported following Real Madrid's 5-1 loss to Barcelona on Sunday that Real Madrid would fire Lopetegui and present Conte on Monday. ESPN could not confirm the impending move on Sunday.

Mundo Deportivo reported that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez left Sunday's loss at Camp Nou without addressing the team.

According to Marca, Lopetegui spoke with his players following the loss and said goodbye to them "just in case."

Conte stepped down at Chelsea in July after two seasons, where he won the Premier League in his first year and the FA Cup in the second campaign. He previously served as Italy coach and at Juventus, where he won three straight Serie A titles.

After the departure of star Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, Real Madrid are mired in ninth place in La Liga with 14 points through 10 games, seven points adrift of leaders Barcelona.

Lopetegui, 52, had been set to coach Spain at the World Cup, but he was announced as the next Madrid coach just before the start of the tournament, and Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales reacted by immediately sending him home from Russia.

His first game in charge of Madrid was a 4-2 defeat to neighbours Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup, and of his 15 matches in charge he won just seven while losing six and drawing two.

Conte has been out of work since being dismissed by Chelsea in July. The Italian won three straight Serie A titles with Juventus from 2012-2014 before leading the Italy national team to the quarterfinals of Euro 2016. He then took over and won the Premier League in his first season in charge, and the FA Cup last May.

During his time in charge of Madrid, Lopetegui spoke often about bad luck with injuries and his team paying for an inability to finish chances created by their impressive build-up play, though there were plaudits from many pundits after a 3-0 victory over Roma in their opening Champions League game of the campaign.

But recent weeks brought some horrendous team performances and results, including a 3-0 La Liga defeat at Sevilla, a 1-0 loss at CSKA Moscow in the Champions League and a 2-1 defeat at home to Levante in La Liga.

After winning the Champions League trophy in four of the past five seasons, Madrid lost Ronaldo in July, and Zinedine Zidane stepped down as coach, suggesting as he left that the squad needed a big shake-up.

With Perez saving money ahead of a €400 million-plus stadium renovation project, and reported transfer targets Neymar and Kylian Mbappe staying at Paris Saint-Germain, Madrid did not sign a big-name replacement for Ronaldo.

Instead, around €100m was invested in youngsters, including Vinicius Jr., 18, from Brazil and Spain right-back Alvaro Odriozola. Thibaut Courtois, who joined from Chelsea, was the main first-team arrival.

As a player, Lopetegui was a goalkeeper who had spells as a back-up at both Madrid and Barcelona, and he also played for Rayo Vallecano and Logrones.

He began his coaching career at Rayo, moved to Madrid's Castilla youth sides, then coached Spain's under-19s, U20s and U21s. He spent 18 months at Porto before leading the Spain national team through qualification for the 2018 World Cup.
