The Melbourne Renegades have hung on to a nail-biting three-run victory over the Hobart Hurricanes to secure a spot in cricket's Rebel WBBL finals.

Amy Satterthwaite produced a fine captain's knock off 66 from 57 balls to inspire the Renegades to 6-146 before the Hurricanes were held to 6-143 in a last-ball heart-stopper in St Kilda.

With the Hurricanes needing nine to win off the last over, Molly Strano held her nerve and ultimately, with five required off the final ball or four to force a super over, Corinne Hall could only muster a single.

Opener Erin Fazackerley (52) played the innings of her life and together with Indian star Smriti Mandhana (26), bludgeoned the Renegades attack during the powerplay.

The introduction of legspinner Georgia Wareham - who started with a wicket maiden, the key scalp of Mandhana - boosted the home side.

Quicky Leah Tahuhu (1-18) sent Fazackerley's stumps flying before England captain Heather Knight fell for 28, though the Hurricanes were never out of the chase until the very end.

The Renegades had Satterthwaite, who far and away played her best knock of the season, to thank for pulling them out of some early strife.

England's World Cup winning left-arm spinner Alex Hartley (3-21) picked up the early wickets of Danni Wyatt for a golden duck and Emma Inglis for one, while Sophie Molineux's run out for 18.

Satterthwaite steadied the innings with a sublime knock studded with a half dozen fours and a six.

She was the last wicket to fall with the score on 139 with Jess Duffin (30) providing the only tangible support during a fouth-wicket stand worth 46.

Following the Adelaide Strikers' 30-run win over the Perth Scorchers in Alice Springs in Saturday's early match, the Renegades cannot be displaced from the top four.
