India's narrow victory in the first Test in Adelaide was ground breaking for a variety of reasons as Virat Kohli's side attempt to win their first series on Australian shores.

India have never won a Test series in Australia and their 31-run triumph over Tim Paine's side puts them in a strong position to break that hoodoo this summer.

It was India's first Test win in Australia for over a decade, following their most recent triumph against a Ricky Ponting-led side in Perth in 2008 and also marked their smallest winning margin in a Test match away from home.

The victory was the first time that India have won a first Test of a series in Australia, following nine previous loses and two draws from 11 attempts.

The tourists can now also boast another feat as they became the first Asian team to win Tests in England, South Africa and Australia, all in the same calendar year.

It wasn’t just team records that fell during the Adelaide Test, with Kohli becoming just the fourth Indian player to score 1,000 Test runs for their country in Australia behind a trio of greats in Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid.

He also became the first Asian captain to win Test matches in England, Australia and South Africa, a feat that Indian greats Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni couldn't replicate.

For Australia the news isn't so great, with the narrow defeat in Adelaide the second time in the last three years they have opened the Test summer with a loss.

Australia fell to South Africa in the opening Test of the 2016/17 summer and you have to go way back to 1988 to find a home loss for the Aussies in the first Test of a summer.

Tim Paine’s side now have three days to lick their wounds, ahead of the second Test against India in Perth starting on Friday.

It will be the first Test held at the new Perth Stadium, with Australia’s record at the WACA Ground in Perth mixed in recent time.

Last summer Australia crushed England by an innings and 41 runs, but their two previous Test matches in the state could only provide a loss to South Africa and a draw against New Zealand.
