Rashaan Salaam's 1994 Heisman Trophy has fetched a record price.

The former Colorado running back had sold his award two years prior to his death in December 2016, but it sold again Saturday for a record $399,608, according to SCP Auctions.

The online auction opened bidding on Jan. 8 and closed this weekend, with a portion of the proceeds from the sale set to be donated to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) research in Salaam's memory.

Salaam became the fourth player in college football history to run for over 2,000 rushing yards. He finished his stint with the Buffaloes with a total of 3,057 yards and 38 touchdowns before being selected by the Bears with the No. 21 overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft. He then became the youngest running back in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards during his rookie season.

Salaam died of an apparent suicide at age 42 after suffering from depression linked to CTE that stemmed from concussion symptoms.

The previous record had been held by Bruce P. Smith’s 1941 trophy, which sold for $395,240 in 2005. Other notable auction sales include O.J. Simpson's 1968 trophy ($255,000 in 1999); Charles White's 1979 trophy ($184,000 in 2000); and Paul Hornung's 1956 trophy ($250,000 in 2000).
