The opening game of the one-day international series between England and India in Bristol was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

Overnight downpours continued throughout the morning and, with standing water collecting on the outfield, the umpires made the decision to call things off at 1.30pm, three hours after the scheduled start.

Alex Hales feels ready for ODI chance

England had planned to give Nottinghamshire opener Alex Hales his ODI debut but that will now have to wait until Cardiff on Wednesday when, weather permitting, what has now become a four-match series will get under way.

India, world champions in the 50-over format, are looking to bounce back from a 3-1 defeat in the preceding Test series, a campaign that ended with England winning the final two matches by an innings.

Former international Ravi Shastri has been brought in as team director in "overall charge" for the remainder of India's tour, although head coach Duncan Fletcher retains his position.
