SOUTH Sydney have left the door open for an immediate coach swap between Anthony Seibold and Wayne Bennett, saying they’ll “wait and see” how the situation plays out.

The Rabbitohs announced the signing of Bennett on a two-year deal from 2020 on Thursday, while Seibold is likely to get the job at the Broncos following a board meeting next Tuesday.

Both coaches are under contract until the end of 2019, with Bennett insisting he’ll see out the remainder of his deal before moving to Sydney.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m at the Broncos in 2019 and Seibold will be at South Sydney,” Bennett said on Friday.

“Whether the Broncos make any moves, I don’t know.”

Rabbitohs head of football Shane Richardson also expected that to be the case, telling Channel 9 his relationship with Seibold was still on good terms.

“‘Seibs’ has got a contract in place and I haven’t fallen out with Seibs and he hasn’t fallen out with me,” Richardson said.

“It’s just unfortunate the way it’s happened.

“We could work quite easily together in ‘19. We’ll just wait to see how it all unfolds.

“To be fair, Anthony Seibold’s done a great job and he’s got a great rapport with me and the players.”

Richardson said players close to Bennett like Darius Boyd hadn’t been promised to the club.

“We haven’t discussed one player apart from Sam Burgess and Greg (Inglis),” he said.

“Greg’s words to me were ‘he’s always wanted to coach me, Richo’.

“Sam was good about it. The Burgess brothers love Wayne.”

The Rabbitohs tabled Seibold a contract extension back in June, but with the rookie coach interviewing for the Broncos role, and therefore stalling on the offer, it was pulled.

“I always genuinely though that he’d stick with us, it didn’t overly concern me,” Richardson said.

“But when it became clearer and clearer that he wouldn’t be with us, we had to (move on).

“We’re a great club, we don’t want to be second best to anybody.”
