Kedar Jadhav is unlikely to feature in the remainder of IPL 2019 after picking up a shoulder injury while fielding during the team's final league game of the season against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday (May 5). Jadhav is scheduled for scans and an x-ray tomorrow to confirm the extent of his injury, which Stephen Fleming said "didn't look good."

Fleming, head coach of Chennai Super Kings, revealed that the middle-order batsman was in considerable discomfort.

"He's getting an x-ray and a scan tomorrow, so we're hopeful for him. I don't think we'll see him again in this tournament for us," Fleming said. "His attention is turned to the World Cup. He's in some discomfort but we need to be accurate with our assessment tomorrow. Fingers crossed that it is nothing too serious but it didn't look that good," he added.

Jadhav sustained the injury while diving to save an overthrow at the boundary line in 14th over of Kings XI Punjab's innings. He walked off the field clutching his left shoulder and didn't return for the remainder of the chase, which KXIP sealed with two overs to spare.

The timing of Jadhav's injury, exactly 30 days before India's World Cup opener against South Africa on June 5, will cause jitters in the national team with the 34-year-old penciled in for a permanent role in the middle-order thanks to his quick scoring and part-time bowling abilities.

Jadhav has been beset by injury problems of late. He suffered a hamstring tear in the first game of IPL 2018, an injury that flared up once again during the 2018 Asia Cup in UAE. The all-rounder had voiced the importance of managing his workload ahead of this season of IPL in the light of the World Cup that follows.

"Basically every cricketer who plays for India it's a dream for him to feature in a World Cup team, and I'm no different to that," Jadhav had said. "My workload, I think, is about managing my bowling. In Chennai Super Kings, I don't think I need to bowl as much as I do in the Indian team. We all are professional cricketers and we know how to manage our bodies. How you recover after every IPL game really matters during this two-month period."

Jadhav has endured a lukewarm season of the IPL with the bat, aggregating only 162 runs from 12 innings at a strike-rate of 95.86 and a top score of 58 against Mumbai Indians.
