THE Philadelphia 76ers have looked internally to fill their vacant general manager position.

Elton Brand, the former No. 1 overall pick who had already seen a fast rise up the 76ers’ front office, will be named as the team’s new general manager on Friday (AEST), according to multiple reports.

The news, first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, comes after Bryan Colangelo’s dismissal in June, following an investigation into the dissemination of private information.

The 76ers decided to go through their entire off-season without a general manager — Brett Brown led the way for the organisation — and interviewed a series of outside candidates, from former Cleveland Cavaliers GM, David Griffin; to Utah Jazz assistant GM, Justin Zanik; and Houston Rockets VP, Gersson Rosas.

At the end of the day, it was Brand, who had been serving as executive vice president of basketball operations, who got the ultimate promotion. The 39-year-old had also spent time as the general manager of the 76ers’ G-League affiliate after retiring from playing in 2016.

Along with the promotion of Brand, the 76ers made a series of other decisions. According to ESPN, Alex Rucker will now serve as vice president of basketball operations, while Ned Cohen (assistant general manager) and Marc Eversey (vice president of player personnel) will remain in their respective positions.

This sort of decision-making is a sign that the 76ers are intent on continuity, as they look to build on what was a successful 2017-18 season.

Brand’s reputation as a player was impressive, with the two-time All-Star playing 17 season in the NBA, averaging 15.9 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, over his career. He finished his career with the 76ers, before joining the team’s front office.

It took less than three years for him to become the general manager, and he’s entered that position at a time where the team could legitimately challenge for the Eastern Conference title.
