Perth Glory are on the verge of landing Melbourne City striker Bruno Fornaroli

Unwanted Melbourne City star striker Bruno Fornaroli looks set to join Perth Glory on a multi-season deal at the end of the current A-league campaign.

Glory officially issued a “no comment” statement but a deal to bring the Uruguayan to Perth was reportedly struck today and he will move when his current contract expires at the end of May.

Glory owner Tony Sage confirmed today that Fornaroli was a target for the club next season.

“He is a Glory target for next season. We are talking to him as are other clubs. We are hopeful he sees Glory as the place to be. We are awaiting his response,” Sage said.

It would give Glory immense strike power if Andy Keogh agrees to a new two-year deal that has been tabled by the club. Fornaroli has scored 46 goals in 70 A-League games for Melbourne City.

Sage has continually denied a mooted trade of Fornaroli for Keogh was on the cards: “No swap. He (Keogh) is contracted,” Sage told The West Australian earlier this month.

However City may still chase Keogh after their bid to sign Socceroos striker Jamie MacLaren from Scottish club Hibernian apparently collapsed.

Keogh has said he wants to remain in Perth where his family is now settled.

A falling out between Fornaroli and City manager Warren Joyce was sparked in the off-season when the club’s highest-paid player was apparently denied a move to Sydney FC on a two-season deal worth more than $2.6 million.

He was then dropped from the starting side in October because Joyce was unhappy about his fitness and skinfold tests.

Since then Fornaroli has been frozen out by Joyce, who cited a lack of commitment for his continued absence.

“You take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink,” Joyce said.

Fornaroli had a spell on the sidelines with a serious injury last season and played only a handful of games at the start of this campaign before Joyce banished him.

Fornaroli has continued to train with City but will need to work hard to reach the standards expected by Popovic’s under his tough fitness regime.

When asked about Fornaroli last month Popovic said: “If he was available, I think he could help any side.

“If you’re asking me if Bruno is a good player — yes. Is Andy Keogh a good player — sure is.”
