Cricket Australia have restructured the schedule for the domestic 50-over tournament for the 2019-20 domestic season.

The tournament will be hosted in three different parts - it will commence on September 21. However, after hosting a part of the tournament, the prestigious Sheffield Shield will kick off on October 10.

The remainder of the competition, comprising 11 games, will take place in two more blocks - late-October and mid-November. The final of the competition will be held on November 26. Incidentally, over the previous six Australian seasons, the tournament was held in a single chunk.

The forthcoming season will also witness two of Australia's major grounds, SCG and MCG, hosting five of the games. A domestic one day match hasn't been held at these two iconic venues since 2014 and 2013 respectively. Four matches are set to be played at the WACA as well.

Gold Coast Metricon Stadium, Allan Borer Field in Brisbane, Junction Oval, Drummoyne Oval, Karen Rolton Oval and Hobart's Blundstone Arena will be holding the other games.

Last year, all six state sides were included in the knockout stage - divided into qualifying finals, semifinals and the final. However, this season, each team will play seven group matches and the top two sides will play in the final. The team perched at the top of the points table will get the chance of "hosting rights".

The board's structural changes, in all likelihood, would ensure the Australian cricketers get the opportunity to partake in some of the one-day games. Australia are slated to partake in six T20Is versus Sri Lanka and Pakistan between October 27 and November 8. The Test matches against Pakistan will commence on November 21.

"We've listened to the states, territories, the ACA and players on what is going to make our cricket system stronger," Peter Roach, the chief of CA's cricket operations noted.

"For the men's One-Day Cup, the key priorities were to play matches in more than one block, have them played on bigger grounds, ideally at our major venues, and play some more matches overall. We believe we have been able to meet these priorities."

Meanwhile, Six Sheffield Shield matches will be held before the start of the BBL season. It will ensure the Test hopefuls have the chance to stake their claims for the series versus Pakistan and New Zealand.

"From a timing point of view, we need to ensure that we play matches at times of the season to best present and prepare our players for international cricket," Roach said. "At the same time, we need to ensure there is appropriate rest periods between matches and the right opportunities for players to participate in Premier Cricket.

"We've tried to schedule Sheffield Shield games most effectively around the Test matches, with a Shield round starting as late as we can pre-Christmas to get it as close to the Perth Test, Boxing Day Test and Sydney Test as we can before the KFC Big Bash League season starts."

CA also noted there could be no day-night Shield matches held this year.
