The Egg Bowl turned ugly Thursday night in Starkville, Miss. after Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald suffered a gruesome leg injury in the first quarter.

Fitzgerald, a 6-5 junior, was injured on a 3-yard-run on the Bulldogs' second possession of the game against Ole Miss. He was hit low as he tried to lean forward for more yards. The collision appeared to dislocate his right ankle, similar to the injury Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward suffered on the opening night of the NBA season.

Mississippi State officials quickly attended to Fitzgerald and put his right leg in an aircast and carted him off the field. The Bulldogs have yet to announce the extent of his injury. His parents joined him in the locker room and Fitzgerald was taken to get X-rays on his lower leg.

Keytaon Thompson took over for Fitzgerald under center for the No. 14 ranked Bulldogs, who trailed rival Ole Miss, 7-0, at the end of the first quarter.
