Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has denied being gagged by Football Federation Australia in the wake of coach Alen Stajcic’s sacking on Saturday.

Kerr was scheduled to speak at a Perth Glory football clinic hours after the news broke, but the club backtracked at the last minute and said FFA had intervened and requested she not answer questions from the media.

The striker took to Twitter today to clarify the situation, suggesting she pulled out of the media opportunity in order to gather her thoughts.

“I have not been gagged by the FFA, I have not commented because I wasn’t ready to comment while I am still shocked and upset,” she wrote.

“My trust was in Staj to lead us to the World Cup final & I believe he was the best coach for that.”

Kerr is the latest Matilda to publicly back the sacked coach after a flurry of social media activity on Saturday.

Matildas captain Lisa De Vanna cast a shadow over the motivation behind Stajcic’s axing by tweeting a gif containing the words, “The lies! The lies!”

FFA chairman Chris Nikou and chief executive David Gallop said Stajcic’s sacking came after two confidential surveys and discussions with players and staff.
