Mariners showing interest in bringing former Melbourne City striker Ross McCormack
CENTRAL Coast have cast the line to lure prolific Melbourne City marksman Ross McCormack back to the A-League, as talks continue with Tommy Oar.
The Mariners are in early discussions with the Scottish striker, who set City alight last season with 14 goals in 17 appearances on loan from Aston Villa.
McCormack remains out of favour with Villa manager Steve Bruce and, while there was interest during the transfer window, no permanent move materialised.
But it’s understood new coach Mike Mulvey sees the 32-year-old as a valuable piece of attacking arsenal in his push to resuscitate the wooden-spooners.
The Mariners are looking to complete a loan deal with the Championship side this week, according to the UK’s Daily Mail.
But while they still have two vacant marquee spots to fill, the club has indicated any agreement would likely fall under the salary cap.
Likewise with Oar, another in Mulvey’s sights, though the former Socceroos and Brisbane Roar winger would need a release given his contract with Cypriot outfit APOEL FC does not expire until 2020.
Meanwhile, the Mariners are keeping quiet over potential dates and venues for Usain Bolt’s next appearance.
Speculation has continued to simmer following last Friday night’s debut, which attracted unprecedented pre-season attention but exposed how far the Jamaican sprint king has to climb in his quest for a $3 million A-League contract.
Talks have been held with the Wollongong Wolves around a fixture in early October, though the NPL club is still seeking corporate support to host any such match at WIN Stadium.
