Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign at Old Trafford started with an emphatic victory against his old club Cardiff City.

The Red Devils played a brand of free-flowing football in a stark contrast to the heavily criticised style of recently ousted former boss Jose Mourinho.

Meanwhile, United’s bitter rivals City suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace — with Andros Townsend’s goal of the season contender pushing Pep Guardiola’s side further from the reaches of Liverpool.

Here’s a wrap of all the Premier League action!

CARDIFF 1-5 MANCHESTER UNITED
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made an instant impact as Manchester United caretaker manager with Paul Pogba to the fore in a transformed performance from the final days of Jose Mourinho’s reign in a 5-1 win over Cardiff on Saturday.

United are now just eight points behind Chelsea and Arsenal in the race for a top-four finish as goals from Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard’s double secured victory in the Welsh capital.

ARSENAL 3-1 BURNLEY
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice as Arsenal returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory against Burnley after Mesut Ozil was restored to the starting line-up as captain.

Aubameyang’s two goals moved him clear of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as the Premier League’s leading goalscorer and kept Arsenal firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish.

His 11th and 12th strikes of the season gave Arsenal a 2-0 lead against Sean Dyche’s battling Burnley, who got back into the game through Ashley Barnes and rattled their hosts at times before substitute Alex Iwobi scored late on.

CHELSEA 0-1 LEICESTER
Leicester won at Chelsea for the first time in 18 years after a goal by former England striker Jamie Vardy clinched a surprise 1-0 away victory in the English Premier League.

Eden Hazard struck the crossbar in the first half and teammate Marcus Alonso hit the post late on as fourth-placed Chelsea lost at home in the league for the first time this season.

A run of two wins in 12 games led to media speculation that Claude Puel’s job as Leicester coach was in jeopardy.

MAN CITY 2-3 CRYSTAL PALACE
Manchester City were shocked 3-2 by Crystal Palace at home on Saturday, suffering their second defeat in three Premier League matches to lose ground on Liverpool in the title race.

Pep Guardiola’s team opened the scoring in the first half through Ilkay Gundogan but Roy Hodgson’s men hit back through Jeffrey Schlupp, an Andros Townsend stunner and a Luka Milivojevic penalty.

Kevin De Bruyne pulled back a goal in the 85th minute but it was too little, too late for City.

Townsend’s thumping volley will go down as one of the goals of the season!

WEST HAM 0-2 WATFORD
A first-half penalty by Troy Deeney and a late goal from Gerard Deulofeu led Watford to a 2-0 victory at West Ham in the English Premier League on Saturday.

West Ham was bidding to win a fifth match in a row but fell behind when Robert Pereyra wriggled free in the penalty area and was caught by a clumsy late challenge from Fabian Balbuena.

Lukasz Fabianski saved Deeney’s previous three spot kicks. This time, though, he had no chance as Deeney blasted the ball into a top corner.

Deeney, relishing his role as pantomime villain at the London Stadium, then celebrated by punching the corner flag out of the ground and goading the West Ham supporters.

BOURNEMOUTH 2-0 BRIGHTON
Bournemouth returned to the top half of the English Premier League after beating 10-man Brighton 2-0 on Saturday. David Brooks, one of three players recalled by manager Eddie Howe after last week’s loss at Wolverhampton, scored in each half.

The Wales international fired in from outside the box for the first-half opener, and looped in a header 13 minutes from time.

Brighton was a man down for the final 17 minutes after captain Lewis Dunk was dismissed for two bookable offences. Dunk perhaps had reason to feel aggrieved as his first yellow card was shown following a foul on Brooks which appeared to be committed by Yves Bissouma.

HUDDERSFIELD 1-3 SOUTHAMPTON
The Ralph Hasenhuttl-inspired revival continued when Southampton followed up last week’s shock victory over Arsenal by seeing off fellow struggler Huddersfield 3-1 in the English Premier League on Saturday. Southampton’s new Austrian coach has helped conjure back-to-back wins for the south-coast club for the first time since April 2017 to pull his team three points clear of the relegation zone.

The impressive Nathan Redmond opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Danny Ings claimed his eighth goal of the season, from the penalty spot, just before halftime.

Philip Billing pulled one back for Huddersfield after the break before 18-year-old Michael Obafemi’s first senior strike condemned David Wagner’s men to a fifth straight defeat.

NEWCASTLE 0-0 FULHAM
Rafael Benitez had little to smile about after his Newcastle side was held by bottom club Fulham to a drab 0-0 in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Newcastle did not have a single shot on target at St James’ Park, leaving Benitez, who said ahead of the game that he loved English comedies, stony-faced on the touchline.

Fulham counterpart Claudio Ranieri was a lot happier after watching his team keep a clean sheet in the league for the first time this season.
