Carlton star Darcy Vescio says lengthening the AFLW season will improve the quality of the fledgling competition in season three.

Fresh from winning the VFLW goalkicking award with a stunning nine-goal haul against Essendon on the weekend, Vescio added her support to a longer competition.

The AFL has faced savage criticism for refusing to lengthen the league in 2019 when two new teams, Geelong and North Melbourne, enter the AFLW.

The season is likely to stay at seven weeks, short of a full round-robin.

An incendiary memo from head office in season two, calling on tactical tweaks to improve the look of the game, and a lack of support from broadcaster Channel Seven has seen momentum for the national women's competition stall.

Vescio says a longer season would bring the players closer to professionalism and increase standards.

"If the season gets longer, the girls will play better footy because you don't think every game is an absolute must win," she told AAP.

"With the current system if you lose a game it's just about season over ... it's such a high-stakes stressful season.

"In the AFL, often the best games come through the season when there's less on the line.

"More games means more flow to the season, being able to work into form and better games."

AFLW players have spoken out about the retrograde move, led by marquee star Daisy Pearce.

AFL players haven't followed but Vescio says she feels warm support from male counterparts.

"Our guys are totally supportive. They're interested and they ask how many games we're going to play but they don't think to make their thoughts public," she said.

"That's normal for them. They don't have to promote their game. We come from backgrounds where we have to promote the game to get interest.

"They don't realise the power they would have ... among people making decisions."

Vescio capped a stellar VFLW season on Saturday by kicking the first nine goals of the game against the Bombers.

"I don't usually kick bags," she said.

"Everything was going right. It was bouncing the right way. I was seeing it right ... it was just one of those games."

The AFL is likely to confirm the AFLW season structure next month, with a full fixture release in October.
