Olympique Marseille striker Andre-Pierre Gignac took them to joint top of Ligue 1 with two goals in their 3-0 win against Rennes at the Stade Velodrome.

Romain Alessandrini's first ever goal for the hosts, deep into stoppage time, rounded off the fourth win in a row for Marcelo Bielsa's men, who could only finish sixth in the French top flight last season.

It was also a first win in four for Marseille against their Brittany-based rivals and took them level with Bordeaux, who beat Evian 2-1 on Friday night.

Nantes kept in touch with the early leaders courtesy of a 2-1 win over Nice.

The home side took the lead through Jordan Amavi's own goal and took a two-goal lead into the interval thanks to Etey Shechter's strike just before the break.

Amavi redeemed himself by pulling a goal back with 20 minutes to play, but Nantes held on to sit just three points off the summit.

Toulouse came from behind three times to ensure a share of the points with Caen in a nail-biting 3-3 draw.

Florian Raspentino's early opener for the visitors was cancelled out by Wissam Ben Yedder's spot-kick in the first half, but it was the final 13 minutes which produced most of the action in a breathtaking end to the match.

Lenny Nangis restored Caen's lead, only for Adrien Regattin to level things up once more from the penalty spot.

Jean Calve's strike five minutes from time then looked to have snatched a win for Patrice Garande's men, but Toulouse's never-say-die attitude saw Pavel Ninkov grab one last equaliser, much to the delight of the Stadium Municipal faithful.

Metz's dominant display at home to Bastia was rewarded with a 3-1 win.

Goals from Sergey Krivets, Guido Milan and Juan Falcon proved too much at the Stade Saint-Symphorien for the visitors - although Floyd Ayite scored a memorable goal on the counter-attack to make it 1-1 at the break.

In the day's other game, Benjamin Moukandjo scored the game's only goal as Reims ran out 1-0 winners at Lorient.
