THE last man to score a goal with a place kick says he is stunned by today’s goalkicking.

Tony Ongarello played 131 games for Fitzroy and kicked his place kick goal at Brunswick Oval in 1955.

But he said the goalkickers of today make him “feel good” about his own record.

“I can’t believe some of the kicks that they do,” he said.

“They run in as if they’re going to kick for goal, last minute they veer out. Then they’ve got to kick it back and invariably they miss it.”

Ongarello, 85, said he had never completed a place kick other than as a 15-year-old in the local park before he tried his luck.

“I don’t know where I got the courage from,” he said.

“(The umpire) didn’t say anything.

“As I was walking back. I thought ‘I’ve got to kick this ... why don’t I try it?’.”
