JUSTIN Langer has made an embarrassing statistical mistake in his explanation of why Glenn Maxwell was left out of his first Test squad as Australia coach.

Langer has pinned the Victorian’s omission on his lack of centuries across all formats in comparison to the men picked ahead of him and Australia’s two best — but unavailable — batsmen, Steve Smith and David Warner.

“Glenn Maxwell is 30 years old and everything above A-grade cricket he’s scored 17 hundreds,” Langer said on SEN on Wednesday. “I’ll put that in perspective for you, Steve Smith has scored 79 hundreds and David Warner’s scored 88.

“Travis Head, for example, is six years younger than Maxwell and he’s got 15 hundreds and white or red ball, he’s a developing cricketer, he’s a terrific young bloke, he’s a captain of South Australia, has been for three years and incredibly impressive.”

Unfortunately for Langer he got his maths wrong, making the mistake of adding Test, one-day international and Twenty20 International centuries on top of first-class, List A and Twenty20 hundreds. First-class, List A and T20 statistics all take in international runs, meaning international hundreds were doubled up in his tally.

Rather than 79 and 88 respective hundreds, Smith has a still very impressive 48 and Warner 53. It should be noted that Maxwell’s century tally also takes a hit, going down from 17 to 13 — one less than Head’s century total, which falls from 15 to 14. .
