Josh Reynolds details severity of hamstring injury
A “DEVASTATED” Josh Reynolds is expecting to miss a month of football after injuring his hamstring right at the end of the Wests Tigers final training session before Round 1.
Speaking to Fox Sports reporter Lara Pitt on Saturday, Reynolds said the Tigers’ Captain’s Run on Friday was almost complete when he felt a twinge and “knew something was wrong”.
The star recruit has since had scans and said he thought the injury was a Grade 2 tear, which will likely keep him sidelined for at least the first four rounds.
“Yeah, I was pretty devastated yesterday, I’m not going to lie,” Reynolds said.
“ ... I get out there and it was literally right at the end of a session and I knew there was something wrong, which sucked because I done it last year and as you said, you train all pre-season and then that happens.”
Reynolds said he hadn’t yet had a doctor look at his scans to determine the extent of the injury but the five-eighth feels he has enough experience to give a pretty accurate self-diagnosis.
“Not 100 per cent yet but I did get the scans and I’m pretty sure it’s a Grade 2,” Reynolds said.
“That was from me looking at them in the car, the scan results, but nah, I reckon around four games, which does suck.
“I’ve been looking so forward to this, I really have. I thought I was really ready but it just wasn’t meant to be.
“It is what it is and I’ve got to move forward and rip into my rehab.”
The last minute injury pitchforked returning Tigers legend Benji Marshall into the starting five-eighth role for the club’s season opening clash with the Roosters and the veteran playmaker is poised to keep the jersey warm for Reynolds for the opening rounds.
Reynolds was incredibly disappointed his debut for his new club had to be delayed and said it was particularly emotional for him after having his first Wests Tigers jersey presented to him at the start of the session he was injured in.
“It was pretty special to be given a jersey by one of the greats of the club and obviously it’s a new jersey for me as well so there was plenty of emotion,” Reynolds said.
“ ... But you know what, it’s just a little speed hump in a massive path for this year, so I’m going to be as positive as I can, I’m going to be myself around the boys because I try and be as upbeat as I can — sometimes you’ve got to put that to the side and put the team first.”
