Johnny Manziel's future in the CFL looked promising with speculation he would end up with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, however Manziel remains unsigned as his self-imposed CFL deadline passed Wednesday.

The Tiger-Cats, which hold the CFL's exclusive negotiating rights for Manziel, released a statement leaving open the possibility to reach a deal in the future.

"While the discussions with Johnny Manziel and his representative have been very cordial and informative there is nothing imminent and nothing to report," the statement read. "We will continue to do our due diligence and will have no further public comment on the matter as we move forward."

Earlier this month, Manziel's agent Erik Burkhart said the Tiger-Cats would have until Jan. 31 to negotiate a deal. Hamilton's most recent starting quarterback, Zach Collaros, earned about $500,000 in 2017 and Burkhart is expecting at least that for Manziel.

"If we cannot reach a deal with Hamilton by this date we will turn our focus to several other professional options readily available to us," Burkhardt said in a statement earlier this month, per ESPN.

Manziel hasn't played in a game since Decemeber 2015 and he hasn't been on a team since the Browns cut him in March 2016. He was selected with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, but only played in 14 games over two seasons with Cleveland.
