The Eastern Africa Athletics Region (EAAR) congress meeting is set to take place on Saturday January 12, 2019 in Addis Ababa. The congress is expected to be attended by all of EAAR member states and the EAAR president, Jackson Tuwei.

The executive board of the East Africa Athletics federation is expected to select its new president who will lead the region. The meeting will be conducted among representatives of national athletics federations from Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, Uganda, Sudan, Rwanda, South Sudan and Tanzania.

The annual congress meeting was held in Asmara, Eritrea a month ago. The meeting entertained several issues with a recommendation focusing on organizing competitions in the region. Furthermore, various issues concerning administration and finance, programs, human resources development, increasing participation of the countries in the region in continental and international competitions were raised.

According to sources, president of the National Athletics Federation of Kenya, Jackson Tuwei, is expected to be re-appointed as head of the EAAR. However, interim president of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF), Derartu Tulu, also has the possibility of being elected president.

It is to be recalled that the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) held its congress for two days from October 9-10, 2018. According to African.com, a partnership agreement to develop athletics on the African continent was signed between the Moroccan Athletics Federation and the Confederation of African Athletics on the sidelines of the same meeting.
