Jazz, Ingles beat Thunder in chippy clash

Tensions repeatedly boiled over with cheap shots, shoves and trash-talking but Joe Ingles and his Utah Jazz have withstood it to move within one win from eliminating Oklahoma City Thunder from the NBA Playoffs.

The Jazz won 113-96 in Salt Lake City on Monday with Ingles launching another game-changing three-point barrage and renewing his physical and verbal jousting with Thunder All-Star Paul George.

Both picked up technical fouls amid the niggle and Jazz forward Jae Crowder was ejected when his left forearm struck the Thunder's Kiwi centre Steven Adams in the face.

"It's playoff basketball," George told reporters.

"It is going to get chippy."

The win gave the Jazz a commanding 3-1 lead against a Thunder team also loaded with All-Stars Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony.

Game five is in Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Ingles started the game missing his first four three-point attempts but ended burying five in his 20-point haul.

It was the second consecutive game he sank five threes.

"I got some good looks early and I'd take those four any day but they missed," Ingles said.

"The guys were great and told me to keep shooting."

George received a technical foul when he pushed Ingles in the first-quarter while taking exception to the Australian guarding him closely.

Ingles was later called for a technical when he attempted to grab the ball off George.

The teams had to be separated midway through the fourth quarter when Jazz centre Rudy Gobert claimed he was struck in the genitals by Thunder guard Raymond Felton.

Ingles and Westbrook also exchanged words as the Jazz ran away with the win in the final quarter.

Ingles launched a game-defining 90-second period late in the second quarter when he hit three consecutive long bombs to give the Jazz a 58-52 halftime lead.

Late in the third quarter Ingles was inspirational as he dived forward, cut off a pass, flicked the ball back to a team-mate, ran down the court, found an open spot behind the three-point line and buried another bomb.

Ingles' Australian team-mate Dante Exum had just two points from 10 minutes on the court.

Rookie star Donovan Mitchell top-scored for the Jazz with 33 points.

The Thunder shot a woeful 19 per cent on three-pointers while George had 32 points, Westbrook 23 and Anthony was quiet with 11.

The NBA's top seed, the Houston Rockets, are also just one win from eliminating Minnesota.

The Rockets blasted the Timberwolves 119-100 on Monday night in Minneapolis to take a 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series.

They can end it in Houston on Wednesday.

The Timberwolves were overwhelmed in the third quarter when the Rockets scored 50 points, with James Harden pouring in 22 of his 36 in the period.

The Rockets other All-Star, Chris Paul, also scored 15 of his 25 points in the near-record third quarter scoring tsunami.

The Los Angeles Lakers achieved the record in 1962 with 51 points in the fourth quarter of a playoff loss to Detroit.

Tuesday will be crucial for Australian NBA players Ben Simmons, Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova, Thon Maker and Aron Baynes.

Simmons' Philadelphia 76ers can eliminate Miami and move into the second round with a win at home while Mills' San Antonio Spurs will have their season extinguished if they lose to the Golden State Warriors in Oakland.

The series between Milwaukee, featuring Dellavedova and Maker, and Baynes' Boston Celtics hangs in the balance with game five in Boston.
