Jack McGregor’s impressive Western Force debut against Hong Kong
WESTERN Force full-back Jack McGregor introduced himself to World Series Rugby in stunning style with two tries in Friday night’s 45-24 victory over Hong Kong Dragons.
The talented McGregor, pinched from the Melbourne Rebels, was one of his side’s best performers in his starting debut at nib Stadium.
It was the normal playmaker’s first game at No.15 at the higher level and the 21-year-old has no regrets about leaving Super Rugby behind.
“I’ve only played a few games at full-back at club level but I really enjoyed it,” McGregor said.
“I’m really enjoying my time here. I’d love to stay.
“I’ve got no regrets at all about moving over. At first it was a pretty tough decision because it all happened so quickly but I don’t regret one thing.”
After his brace of tries in the first half, he also set up local product Clay Uyen for his second try with a neat inside pop pass.
Force coach Tim Sampson said McGregor was a very creative player.
“He’s played a lot of fly-half as well and he’s a natural footy player,” Sampson said.
“He put in a pretty solid performance.”
The Force were dominant but rusty after a month without a game against a Dragons side whose players were pushing for selection for Hong Kong’s World Cup qualifying matches.
The Force finally get to string matches together from next Friday when they play the powerful Robbie Deans-coached Panasonic Wild Knights followed by the invitation Australian Stockman side.
They then launch their National Rugby Championship campaign.
Captain Ian Prior welcomed the back-to-back games.
“There were almost too many (chances) in that first 25 minutes, ones that we didn’t handle well enough,” he said.
“It’s about consistency and being clinical. We need a bit of composure particularly in their 22 (metres).
“But we found a way to win which was positive. We can build into next week.
“The nice thing is now its back-to-back. We get into a rhythm, a routine and some good habits.”
