ARE you aware that Australia’s 13th highest ever prizemoney earner is in action on Saturday at Caulfield?

And for that matter the third highest prizemoney earner racing in Australia behind Winx and Chautauqua, and with question marks surrounding his status, in reality he’s probably number two.

That horse is the super consistent Sydneysider Happy Clapper, who will run in the $1 million Group 1 Memsie Stakes, and his trainer Pat Webster believes he will add to the total he’s won of $6,340,050 on Saturday.

If he was to win the addition of the first prize of $600,000 would take him to number 11 on the all time list.

Webster is looking forward to seeing the eight-year-old gelding in action and believes he will add to his impressive bank balance this afternoon.

On paper it looks to be a high pressure race with free going gallopers Jungle Edge and Vega Magic setting a cracking race and Webster is looking forward to this.

“He loves a high pressure race. He’s won a Doncaster and an Epsom over the tough Randwick mile,’’ Webster said.

Happy Clapper is a $6 third favourite behind Vega Magic at $2.90 and Kementari at $5 in TAB fixed odds.

Although Happy Clapper is eight, Webster said in his two trials there had been no signs he’d gone backward and has remained at the same level as his last preparation.

Webster said Happy Clapper picked up a lot of money during the Sydney carnival with his wins in the Doncaster and the Canterbury Stakes, a second in the George Ryder and third in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in his four starts which saw him creep up the prizemoney list.

For the record Happy Clapper won $2,2,76,250 last campaign.

“It’s going to be tough but he always runs well. There’s a couple of things against him though which are having his first start at Caulfield and also if there’s rain.”

“He’ll also improve from tomorrow’s run but we’re happy where he’s at going into it as he’s very bright.

“He’s pretty fit, he’s sound and happy. If he can recapture his form from last preparation he should be in the finish.”

Webster said it was possible Happy Clapper could do all of his racing in Melbourne in the spring as he could have a weight-for-age run every two weeks in a eight-for-age race.

Webster said they weren’t dodging Winx, just that the Melbourne program suited him better.

Happy Clapper will be ridden for the first time in his career by Mark Zahra.
