Daniel Worrall, the South Australia pacer who walked off the field one over into the second innings of the Sheffield Shield game against Western Australia on Tuesday (March 5) with hamstring soreness, is devastated with the timing of his injury.

The 27-year-old was said to be in Australia's plans for the 2019 Ashes in England. The right-arm pacer, who can swing the ball both ways and also get some reverse swing, was thought to be an excellent fit for the Australian setup for English conditions.

"(Worrall's) really disappointed, he's devastated. He knows it's a critical time for him," said South Australia coach Jamie Siddons. "He bowled beautifully in the first innings and was set to the job for us in the second. He was looking for Australia A, or Ashes, and to win games for us - which is probably more disappointing for him."

A back injury had earlier forced Worrall to miss a few games this season but he picked up 20 wickets in the four games this season, including a 10-fer against Western Australia in November 2018. He returned to action during the Big Bash League and helped Melbourne Stars progress to the final, and even picked up four-wicket haul in the semi-final.

The injury now means Worrall is set to miss the next Shield game against Queensland but Siddons was hopeful that the pacer would take the field on March 20 against Victoria for the final game of the season.

"We'll do everything we can to get him back for the last game of the year, to give him a chance to push his claims, but he's pretty shattered at the moment."
