Graham Arnold says he only chose two A-League players in his squad because...
Graham Arnold has explained why Dimi Petratos and Josh Risdon are the only A-League-based players to be named in his first Socceroos squad.
The 31-man squad taking part in a training camp in Turkey next week is dominated by European-based players, but Arnold is confident Australia’s top domestic league can produce players for the Socceroos.
Sydney FC’s Josh Brillante is one of a few A-League players to have missed out on selection, with Arnold opting use the camp to get a closer look at the players plying their trade in Europe.
“I’ve basically only taken two A-league players in Dimi Petratos and Josh Risdon because they were part of the WC squad,” Arnold said.
“For the other A-League players, I see them every week, I’ll be here the whole time, and I’ll get to see every A-League game.
“If you’re playing well in the A-League then you’ll get the opportunity with me.
“I believe the A-League is at a level where it produces players for the Socceroos.
“Last week I had 23 Olyroo players from the A-League and there was some top kids in that group.
“It’s the same that goes for Joshy (Brillante) and the Adam Taggart’s,
Brandon O’Neill’s, across to the James Troisi’s, right across the A-League, I get to see them all the time.
“This camp is more about me getting to see the European boys up close.”
The Socceroos will head to the Turkish city of Antalya next week for their first training camp under Arnold and will return to Australian shores to play South Korea on November 17.
Arnie’s new-look side will then play Lebanon three days later on November 20 at ANZ Stadium in Sydney, with Aussie legend Tim Cahill expected to make one last appearance for his country.
