STEVE Smith suffered a short stay at the crease in his fifth outing in the Caribbean Premier League, perishing for a second-ball duck.

The exiled Australian star was the third man out in the space of four balls for the Barbados Tridents against the Trinbago Knightriders, stumped off the bowling of left-arm finger-spinner Khary Pierre in the second over.

Coming out to bat after Dwayne Smith and Shamar Springer fell to back-to-back deliveries — DR Smith bowled by Pierre and Springer run out — Smith survived the team hat-trick ball only to walk past the second delivery he faced. The right-hander was done in by a wicked bit of dip from Pierre, failing to get to the pitch of a delivery that spun sharply past the outside edge.

Having elected to bat, the Tridents went on to post a total of 8-128. It was a target the Knight Riders chased down with ease, winning with 3.3 overs and four wickets to spare thanks largely to a 44-ball 66 from Brendon McCullum.

McCullum was out to Smith’s first ball of the innings, skying a catch back to the part-time legspinner. The Australian only bowled another two balls for the match, with Dwayne Bravo finishing the game off with a boundary in the 17th over.

Earlier Fawad Ahmed took 2-13 off his four overs for the Knight Riders, while Chris Lynn fell for eight for the winning side.
