GLENN Maxwell has made no excuses for a horror one-day tour of England, in which Australia were humiliated in a series whitewash.

Injuries and suspensions meant Australia headed into the five-match series in June without several key players, leaving the side helpless against the English onslaught.

“It was pretty brutal,” Maxwell said of the tour when asked on SEN’s Whateleyon Tuesday.

“It was probably the equivalent of watching St Kilda footy club when we were struggling for a few years, where every time we went on the field it was like ‘how are we going to stop the bleeding.’”

Maxwell said Australia “didn’t really have any answers” during the entire ODI series, which resulted in the side plummeting to sixth in the ICC one-day rankings for the first time since 1984.

The loss was also Australia’s fourth-consecutive in a bilateral ODI series.

“Unfortunately, once we came up against the world number one side in one-day cricket, we just got pantsed,” Maxwell said.

At least three changes will likely be made to the squad for Australia’s next one-day assignment in November, as star pace trio Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are expected to be fit.

But Maxwell predicts the axe won’t stop there given the number of underwhelming individual performances in England.

“We play our next one-day series against South Africa in Australia and it’ll be interesting to see the sort of side that lines up for that one because there was obviously a fair chunk of us that didn’t perform up to standard, and that’s going to need to change pretty quickly,” he said.

Maxwell also provided some insight into the early stages of Justin Langer’s leadership, revealing the side’s new coach had “a few choice words” with his underperforming side during the tour.

He added: “He’s not going to take mediocre performances, that’s for sure.

“We were quite poor, I suppose, in England against the world number one side. There are probably going to be some changes over the next few months.”

Maxwell also revealed Langer’s training sessions have placed a heavy emphasis on fitness and fielding, which the all-rounder believes has provided a “good basis” for the team.
