Alan Mulholland has stepped down as Galway manager after deciding against seeking another term.

The Salthill-Knocknacarra clubman succeeded Tomás Ó Flatharta in 2012 after guiding the county’s U21s to an All-Ireland title the previous year.

The Tribesmen reached their first Connacht final in five years this summer and were defeated by Kerry at the All-Ireland quarter-final stage but Mulholland has opted against continuing in the role.

A statement from the Galway County Board said: "Alan Mulholland has decided not to exercise his option of another year as Galway senior football manager for 2015.

"Alan has informed the County GAA Board that due to work and family commitments he will be unable to continue in his role as senior manager for the coming season.

"Alan’s contribution to Galway football over the years has been both distinguished and significant.

"Alan was appointed manager of the Galway senior football team in 2011 and his policy of developing and nurturing young players on the senior team has created a solid foundation for the future."
