Many surfers hate sharing the waves, but for Fremantle half-back Connor Blakely, helping everyone enjoy the ocean is a thrill all of its own.

Blakely volunteers with the Disabled Surfers Association of WA, which helps disabled people get on a board and into the ocean.

“They love it, you see the smile they have on their face and the smile on their carers face as well, it’s pure happiness,” Blakely said.

The footballer was helping down at Leighton beach yesterday along with teammates Adam Cerra, Hugh Dixon and Ryan Nyhuis.

The Disabled Surfers Association of WA has been operating since 2005 and runs four events throughout the summer both in Perth and the South West. A chapter in Albany has recently started.

Participants are helped onto a board and into the water by a large team of volunteers who stay with them every step of the way.

“This is a really controlled environment and it’s really safe,” Blakely said.

Blakely said he has enjoyed the opportunity to do a range of volunteer work through the Dockers.

“There are so many people out there who have been dealt a really bad hand in life through no control of their own so just to step into their world for a little bit and put a smile on their face it means a lot. It gives a bit of perspective,” Blakely said.

“Seeing how happy they are in this environment really shows the power of the ocean.”
